Biography
The Amsterdam Brass Quintet was founded in January 2004. The quintet consists of a group of young brass players who not only work their instruments every day but are also working to reach the audience in a new way. The different styles of music that the quintet can bring are very broad. You can hear Canzonas by Gabrieli and Fugues by Bach, but also songs by the Beatles and Curaçao Danzas. Because the brass quintet has not always been popular in terms of form (especially in Europe), finding original music is always a big challenge for the members. Some even take this so seriously that they compose pieces themselves, such as “Parabolen” by Misha Sporck.
The quintet has performed on a Soviet submarine from 1954 (this was a good year for submarines!), gave concerts in Curaçao at the invitation of CIFA Foundation, recorded its own CD in 2006, played as a repiano ensemble with the National Youth Fanfare Orchestra during the piece Concerto Medieval by Bernard van Beurden (here is a CD recording), played for the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands Antilles, Mr. P.R.J. Comenencia, won the audience award at OnWings! In 2009, in 2011 the piece “Out of Europe” was written by Van Beurden especially for the brass quintet with the great soprano Marieke Steenhoek, in January 2013 there was a successful tour to Florida (watch an item on a local news station here), a memorable performance in 2013 during the Zuider Havendijk concert in Enkhuizen and many other beautiful concerts and performances.
