Herbert Haufrecht attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and studied composition at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1937 he went to West Virginia on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture, where he began collecting folk songs and folk tales. After his return to New York he worked as a composer for the Federal Theater and the Workers Laboratory Theater.
He also worked from 1941 to 1945 as musical director at Camp Woodland in the Catskills for children from the New York area to introduce them to the folk traditions of the area. The Catskill Folk Festival was held there annually from 1940 to 1953 and resumed in the late 1970s. As a result of this work, Haufrecht published the three-volume collection Folk Songs of the Catskills in 1983.
After World War II, Haufrecht worked as an editor and arranger for various publishers such as Mills Music, Associated Music Publishers, and Ricordi Publishers. He also worked with folk musicians such as Burl Ives, The Weavers, Pete Seeger, and Judy Collins for whom he wrote the 1969 Judy Collins Songbook.
In addition to operas and symphonic works, his compositions include numerous songs and chamber music works.
